Professionally operated support groups are facilitated by professionals. The facilitator controls discussions. The Center for Therapy & Counseling offers support groups may that run for a specified period of time, and an attendance fee is charged. Support groups are made up of people with common interests and experiences.
People who have been through, or are going through, a similar circumstance can do more than sympathize with you — they can relate to what you are going through and keep you from feeling like you are alone.
Therapy Groups are facilitated by licensed therapists. There is clear evidence for the effectiveness of group psychotherapy. The recognition of shared experiences and feelings among group members and that these may be widespread concerns, serves to remove a group member's sense of isolation, validate their experiences, and raise self-esteem.
Group therapy can benefit many different people, from those having difficulties with interpersonal relationships to those dealing with specific problems such as depression, anxiety, serious medical illness, loss, addictive disorders or behavioral problems. With adolescents, for example, group therapy teaches socialization skills needed to help function in environments outside the home.
